“Our Heart Beats for Armenia” research study run on Fitrockr.

In a season that will be remembered for decades, Arminia Bielefeld has captured the hearts of football fans across Germany with a historic run to the German DFB-Football Trophy Final (on May 24, 2025). Once considered an outsider, the club has defied the odds, toppling Bundesliga giants and riding a wave of belief, unity, and determination all the way to Berlin.

From the outset, Arminia’s cup campaign looked like a long shot. Drawn against top-tier teams in the early rounds, few expected the 3. League Bundesliga side to progress far. But what unfolded was nothing short of magical. Arminia displayed fearless football, tactical brilliance, and unshakable resilience. Each round saw dramatic goals, passionate game play and an ever-growing fanbase believing in the impossible.

The city of Bielefeld has been gripped by Pokal fever. Local businesses are decked out in blue and white, schools have organized viewing parties, and fans are preparing for what could be the club’s greatest moment in modern history.

But this final is not just a sporting event — it’s also the subject of a innovative scientific study.

In collaboration with Fitrockr, the University of Bielefeld and Wissenswerkstadt Bielefeld, fan experience will be measured like never before. Hundreds of Arminia supporters will wear Garmin health-tracking devices throughout the match, enabling researchers to monitor heart rate and stress data before, during, and after the final.

The setup and process is as easy as it gets. Fans scan a QR-Join-Code generated by the Fitrockr Research platform. Once the QR-Code is scanned, fans can connect their Garmin device to the Fitrockr platform which will automatically extract the health and fitness data for analysis by the researchers from the University of Bielefeld and Wissenswerkstadt Bielefeld. All data is handled with highest security and data protection standards to ensure that no fan worries about contributing data to this innovative study.

The goal of the study is to analyze emotional intensity, stress levels, and the physiological impact of high-stakes football

“This is a unique opportunity to combine science with passion,” says Joerg Fehlinger, CEO at Fitrockr. “This study allows to understand what it truly means — physically and emotionally — to be a fan living through a once-in-a-lifetime match.”

Data from the project can offer insights into crowd psychology, emotional health, and could even inform new approaches to stress management and fan engagement in sports environments.

Whether Arminia Bielefeld lifts the trophy or not, one thing is certain: they’ve already won the hearts of a nation. And now, they’re about to make science history too.

Armenia Bielefeld did not win the game but demonstrated resilience and determination. Bielefeld’s coach, Mitch Kniat, praised his team’s courage and determination, stating, “We can only be proud.” Despite the defeat, the players were celebrated by their fans, who recognized the team’s exceptional efforts throughout the tournament.

Stuttgart secured their fourth DFB-Pokal title—and their first since 1997—by capitalizing on defensive errors from Bielefeld. The match was effectively decided in the first half, with Stuttgart establishing a commanding 3–0 lead. The game ended 4–2.
