Analyze: Data Export
(1) Configure export
Time Period – defines the date range to export. The range is interpreted in the selected time zone, so choose it carefully when participants recorded data in a different time zone than yours.
Example: Participants recorded data in Japan from Jan 1 to Jan 31, and you are based in the UK (9 hours behind Japan). You have two options:
- Select the Japan time zone with Jan 1 – Jan 31 (recommended, exact match).
- Select the UK time zone with Dec 31 – Jan 31 to capture all the data. The export will then also include a few hours of data from outside the original period.
Time Period and Local Timezones in Exports
Why do I need to select a time zone at search?
All data is recorded and stored in UTC timezone. However, a calendar day starts and ends at different moments depending on where a participant is located. July 1st begins 2 hours earlier in Berlin than in UTC, and 7 hours later in Los Angeles. The timezone you select determines how Fitrockr interprets your date range and, for aggregated data, where each day begins and ends.
Non-aggregated data (individual values) (all exports excluding Health Logs)
The selected time zone in your search only determines which measurements fall within your date range. For every value, we also show the participant’s own local time, so you can see, for example, the heart rate at 8:00 AM local time on July 1st. The values themselves are not altered.
Aggregated data (summarized values) (Daily/Hourly/Detailed Health Logs)
Values are summarized per day (e.g. total steps, average heart rate). A “day” is defined as the calendar day in the selected time zone from your search, which is not necessarily the day the participant experienced locally.
- Participant is in the same time zone as selected: Daily values match the participant’s local day exactly.
- Participant is in a different time zone: The daily value covers a 24-hour window that is shifted relative to the participant’s local day. Example: if you select “Europe/Berlin”, the value for “July 1st” for a participant in New York covers July 1st 06:00 to July 2nd 06:00 New York time.
Recommendations
- Participants in a single time zone: Select that time zone. Daily values will then match 1:1.
- Participants in multiple time zones with day-level analysis: Export each time zone group separately, or use non-aggregated data and aggregate by local time yourself.
User – select users to be exported. You can also select groups which will export all users within a group.
Data – select data types to be exported. See Data Dictionary for details. Data types with the addition of “(GC only)” are only available if synced via the Garmin Connect app. HRV metrics (e.g. RMSSD, SDNN, etc.) can be found in the “Daily Health Log”, “Hourly Health Log” and “Detailed Health Log” data type. There is also a specific HRV report at Analyze > HRV.
Options – select “Hide Duplicates and Errors” to remove duplicate data entries and errors from the data export. Select “Anonymize Data” to exclude user names from the data export.
Download – click on download opens the download options. Select how the export file should be named and the export format.
Keep in mind that Excel can only hold up to 1.5m data elements. This can easily be exceeded if exporting accelerometer or other large sets of data. Select CSV or JSON for large data amounts.
Available Downloads – you will find your downloadable file in this section as soon as it is ready.
Click the download icon to download it.
The trash icon will delete the data export.
The redo icon will generate the export file again with the same settings.
The info icon will show details of the data export.
Important Information and Restrictions
Availability and granularity of health data depends on the wearable model and whether the wearable has been synchronised using the Fitrockr app or Garmin Connect. The latter supports less data.
